Many patients with asthma are able to control their symptoms with inhaler therapy. However, some patients with moderate to severe asthma have episodes of frequent symptoms despite being on maximum medications. There are new options called biologic therapy to help these types of patients. Biologic therapies offer new ways of treatment because they target different molecules in the body that contribute to asthma. Your doctor will determine if you are a candidate for biologic therapy. After you receive your injection of biologic medication, the doctor will monitor you for a period of time to make sure you do not have any reactions to the medication.

Biological Therapy

XOLAIR (omalizumab)

Xolair is a medication for patients with poorly controlled asthma and allergies. Xolair blocks the antibody that causes an allergic asthma response.

Xolair is given as one to three subcutaneous injections (shots given under the skin), depending on the dose prescribed.

It is given every 2 or 4 weeks, depending on the dose prescribed.

NUCALA (mepolizumab)

Nucala is a medication for patients with eosinophilic asthma. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that can cause inflammation in the lungs of some patients with asthma. Nucala works by reducing the number of eosinophils in your blood.

Nucala is administered as a shot under the skin once every four weeks.

FASENRA (benralizumab)

Fasenra is a medication for patients with eosinophilic asthma and works by reducing the number of eosinophils in your blood.

Fasenra is administered as a shot under the skin.

It is given once every four weeks for the first three doses, then once every eight weeks.

Biologic Therapy for Hives (Urticaria)

XOLAIR (omalizumab)

While Xolair can be utilized for moderate to severe asthma, it is also a biologic that can be used for chronic urticaria. Patients who fail to respond to adequate oral antihistamine therapy may be candidates for Xolair.

The Xolair dose for urticaria is one to two injections given every four weeks.

Biologic Therapy for Eczema

Dupixent (dupilumab)

DUPIXENT is the first biologic approved for adult patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) that is not well controlled with topical prescription therapies or who cannot use topical therapies.

Dupixent is an injection given underneath the skin (subcutaneous). After an initial dose of two injections, Dupixent is taken as one injection every other week.
